We celebrate exciting news as we make progress with the systems we are developing
Our aim is to grow edible plants. We want to do this with as small carbon footprint as possible. The end result should not only look good but also feel good to look at, knowing we have gone the extra mile while manufacturing it.
Plastic is a wild beast that has been running around untamed since it’s birth when the Mesoamericans used natural rubber to make balls and elastic bands as far back as 1600 BC. In 1839 Johann Eduard Simon discovered polystyrene. Then a while after that, the first fully synthetic thermoset, was reported by Leo Baekeland in 1907.
The world as we know it will not be able to function efficiently without it. Plastic plays a crucial role as a versatile durable material in the manufacturing industry, enabling us preserve food, store liquid, and build things that would be really hard to create with clay, wood and metal. Some plastics have a really great feature, in that it can be melted again, and reused to create a completely different shape. However, left unmanaged it causes more damage to planet Earth than what we would ever have imagined possible.
This was a quick test we did to see how malleable the recycled plastic created by Polyplank is. I stepped on a big blob as it oozed out of the extruder and was pleasantly surprised to see the result.

From Waste to Product

An innovative individual named Jakes Wallage, owner of Polyplank, has discovered a way to recycle various plastics and re-purpose it into machinable plastic timber. We recently visited his factory and were astonished by the process he undertook for the past 13 years. The impact of his business has converted mountains of plastic into useful material used for various applications. See their website here: http://www.polyplank.co.za/
Whilst there certainly are simpler and cheaper ways to manufacture the components required for some of our new designs, we have decided to, where possible, join Jakes in his cause and implement the knowledge gained from his hard work into some of our products.
Keep a look out for updates on our Blog as well as our Design Exhibition to see our creations as we release them one at a time. Let’s celebrate life with art, plants and light!
